Petersfield Museum

Petersfield Museum encompasses the museum in the Old Courthouse and the Flora Twort Gallery. They are both situated in atmospheric buildings in the town centre of Petersfield.

Petersfield Museum and the Flora Twort Gallery are currently closed for winter. Both venues will re-open in March with an exciting new programme of exhibitions, talks, walks and events.

Petersfield Museum tells the social, industrial and cultural history of the town and its surrounding villages from the Bronze Age to the present day in objects, documents and photographs. It changes its main display every year. In addition it has 3-4 temporary exhibitions per year on topical subjects. Recent topics included the history of Petersfield Market and Edward Thomas who lived in the neighbouring village of Steep.

The Flora Twort Gallery

The Flora Twort Gallery is situated in the former home of local artist Flora Twort (1893-1985), a lovely cottage on the church green. In annually changing displays the gallery features Flora Twort’s work, her popular watercolours of the town and its people, as well as her accomplished portraits, prints and drawings.

The gallery also shows a different selection of items from the Bedales Collection every year, a collection of dresses, shoes and accessories from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Our community gallery allows local artists, schools and community groups to showcase their work to a wider public of locals and tourists.

Education and outreach

As a family-friendly museum we put an emphasis on hands-on activities for people of all ages and abilities. Children have the opportunity to dress up, do quizzes or get hands-on with items from our collection. Children and adults alike will also enjoy listening to the memories of local people at the museum, or to go on a town trail.

We offer a programme of education workshops for schools, which we are happy to adapt to fit your class’s needs and interests. We also offer talks about the museum’s collection and the history of our town to community groups and we organise object-centred reminiscence sessions. A range of guided walking tours and adult learning talks are on offer every month.

We are happy to help you with your research and open up our archive for researchers by appointment.
